Frozen Flower Photography

One of the new photography projects we took up this winter was to photograph frozen flowers. I’ve always enjoyed photographing landscapes and flowers. They seem to go hand-in-hand. So, this winter I decided to start a project with “Frozen Flowers”. I loved the wonderful abstract look that the flowers took on when frozen. It left a lot to the imagination in many cases. It’s a great project that you can do at home that doesn’t have to cost a lot. I started buying flowers off the 50% off clearance rack at a local food store. These flowers were in their prime but won’t have lasted much longer – perfect for freezing. So here’s a “Frozen Flower Photography” cheat sheet to help you learn from our experience.

As always, if you have any questions or thoughts, let us know in the blog comments. We love it when we hear from you!

Hope you enjoy the photos!

  1. Thanks Diana for your kind words & visiting our site – we also are mostly staying at home and continue to work on creative project ideas to bring to the group. We are so happy you enjoyed the “Frozen Flower” series. The photos are very different in some cases – since we learned and experimented as we went along. The pattern in the water is best achieved by using distilled water. Nothing was put into it.

We look forward to seeing your “works of art” on-line 🙂

  2. Hi Peter and Susan,
I am so fascinated with your gorgeous frozen flowers that I gave it a go. Thanks for the cheat sheet, I would not have known how to go about it
.As we are in a very strict lockdown,it was a welcome distraction. I only had one decayed Rose which worked out okay. I would just like to know how you achieve the amazing patterns in the water. Do you put something in it? I just went through all your shots again and they are all so very different.
    Keep those awesome images coming.
    Kind regards and stay safe,
    Diana Ludwigs
