Hello Friends,

It’s been a great summer here in Canada with lots of opportunity for travel and photography in regions close to home. But as winter sets in we are starting to think about travelling to warmer climates. One of our favorite places to travel in the Caribbean is Dominican Republic . A whopping 4.6 million tourists flock to the Dominican Republic every year, making it the most-visited destination in the Caribbean. The lush natural beauty and a thriving outdoor and eco-tourism industry, make DR definitely a place to consider. From kiteboarding to exploring caves, this tropical utopia is full of opportunities for photographic adventures. Here are our top 5 photo adventures to consider for your next trip to the Dominican Republic.

Los Haitises National Park – Samana

Los Haitises National Park is a national park located on the remote northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, close to Samana. This park also nurtures one of the DR’s few remaining rainforests, once used as a filming location for the feature film Jurassic Park. You can explore this park by boat from Samaná. The boat takes you right to the park where you can hike its rainforest to view flora up close, or kayak along its lush mangrove system. The caves are fabulous there, shaped by limestone rocks developed by the remains of marine corals and other organisms. It looks like something from another world. These photos were primarily taken with a 11-24 mm lens; in TV mode; at f/4 with a ISO 3200 / 1/125 sec

Mount Isabel de Torres – Puerto Plata

This Mount was easily visible from our resort and had me intrigued from the first time I saw it. A cloud seemed to hang over the top of the mount on a regular basis. So, we just had to go and see what it was all about. You can hike your way up to the top or hop on the only cable car in the Caribbean to reach Mount Isabel de Torres, which is flanked by a giant statue of Christ the Redeemer–one of the province’s iconic landmarks. You’ll be standing 2,600 feet above Puerto Plata’s verdant hills, surrounded with phenomenal views of Puerto Plata’s Atlantic Ocean and the beaches in the distance. Once at the peak, you can hike the beautiful botanical gardens filled with local flora, caves, and plenty of areas for respite from the sun. It was incredible. These photos were primarily taken with a 16-35 mm lens; in AV mode; at f/16 with a ISO 640 / 1/40 sec.

Natural Wilderness on Northern Coast – Puerto Plata

The biggest attraction in the Dominican Republic’s northern coast are its natural wildernesses that are characterised by its rough environment. It is the perfect scenery to discover the local fauna and flora. This photo was taken with a 24-105 mm lens; in AV mode; at f/9 with a ISO 100 / 1/200 sec.

La Romana

This captivating slice of Dominican Republic tropics is found on the island’s southeast coast. La Romana is bathed by the Caribbean Sea and set against a backdrop of lush tropical jungle on the powder white sands of Bayahibe beach. Nearby Cotuba namá National Park is home to luscious cave-riddled forests, natural fresh water springs and ancient Taino rock art. This is truly a magical place to visit and photograph. This photo was taken with a 18-200 mm lens; in AV mode; at f/8 with a ISO 1600 / 1/3200 sec.

Magical Sunsets and Beaches – Punta Cana

If you are a photography or nature lover, or you are looking for the best setting for an unforgettable moment, the place to see the best sunsets in the Dominican Republic is Punta Cana. Sunrise or sunset, you’re always in for a magical surprise. This photo was taken with a 16-35 mm lens; in AV mode; at f/10 with a ISO 200 / 1/30sec.

Flora & Fauna – All over the Island

There are approximately 6,000 species of flora and 7,000 species of fauna thrive in the DR. The stars of our wildlife species are the nearly 3,000 humpback whales faithfully flocking to the Bay of Samaná every year to mate and birth in the warm waters. This photo was taken with a 70-200mm lens; in AV mode; at f/2.8 with a ISO 100 / 1/320 sec.

We hope you enjoyed our photo adventures to Dominican Republic’s and will stay in touch with us.

  1. You pictures are always fabulous. Love the rainbow pic with the huts in the foreground. Also I’m a big fan of sunset pic’s……your clouds above the mountain at sunset is outstanding. Thanks so much for sharing! From a friend in Belleville.
